Incubus | Echo

Songs are memories.

For a time, Billy lived in Nicaragua while I was living by the beach. He’d say that listening to Incubus’ Morning View provided the perfect soundtrack to the surreal landscapes and skies he witnessed take over the coastal horizon of the remote part of the county in which he was staying. I too would listen to the entire album on my many drives from Los Angeles along the coast to my beach pad. It provided me a beautiful soundtrack as well. Sometimes I’d make the drive early in the morning after a night of partying with friends. I loved reaching the water at sunrise when the faint light was just beginning to cast a pink layer over the earth and the moon was still visible through the fog. The ocean looked like red velvet cupcakes and the sky, a pretty pink icing. The colors hung there, waiting for me to eat them.

I’d arrive back home, satisfied, begin my descent into slumber while thinking about Billy and wonder what color the skies were where he was.

Who: Weezer

Album: Pinkerton

Why: from the ages of 15-17 i listened to a lot of punk/hardcore music, lots of angst, lots of screaming and lots of discontent. This album came out in 1996 and it was the first time i heard raw and honest emotion that i could relate with coming out of my speakers. Pinkerton is definitely in my top 5 albums of all time, i still feel the same excitement for this album now that i did when i was 17 and heard it for the first time. i cant live without this album, hopefully you listen to the opening track “Tired of Sex” and feel something.

The Calender Hung Itself by Bright Eyes

Does he know that place below your neck that is your favorite to be touched? And does he cry through broken sentences like “I love you far too much?”

I apologize for the following:

  • The promises I’ve broken or have long yet to fulfill.
  • That one of my next mixtapes will play more like a long-form personal blog post interspersed with music.
  • That another one of my mixes may or may not include Justin Bieber.

A day late, a buck short
I’m writing the report
On losing and failing
when I move, I’m flailing now

and it’ll happen once again I’ll turn to a friend
Someone that understands
Sees through the master plan

But everybody’s gone
And I’ve been here for too long
To face this on my own
Well I guess this is growing up

Or, like this.

Now somewhere in the black mountain hills of Dakota
There lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon
And one day his woman ran off with another guy
Hit young Rocky in the eye Rocky didn’t like that
He said I’m gonna get that boy
So one day he walked into town
Booked himself a room in the local saloon
